How to knit with silk mohair: on its own, held double or paired?

Serafina Silk Mohair

The same yarn can be used in several ways. Serafina Silk Mohair is a lace-weight yarn with 72% kid mohair and 28% silk, hand-dyed in Portugal. Each 50 g skein contains 420 metres.

You can knit with it on its own, hold two strands together or pair it with another yarn. Your choice depends on the fabric you want and the instructions in your pattern.

Using it on its own

For patterns that call for lace-weight silk mohair, you can work with a single strand. Before starting, make a swatch with the needles recommended in the pattern to check your gauge and the fabric.

Holding it double

Holding yarn double means knitting with two strands at the same time, treating them as one. Remember to account for yarn usage: two 420-metre skeins worked together provide approximately 420 metres of double-stranded knitting, not 840.

Pairing it with another yarn

Serafina Silk Mohair can also be worked together with another Serafina yarn. Swatch with both yarns to see how the colours and textures work together and check that your gauge matches the pattern. You can play with the colours you mix for different results.

Caring for your finished piece

Hand wash with a suitable wool wash and store away from direct sunlight. As this yarn is hand-dyed, there may be slight differences between skeins. Keep this in mind when choosing yarn for your project.
